Why have a Diagnostic Ultrasound Scan?
Ultrasound is an exceptional imaging tool for the evaluation of many Musculoskeletal (MSK) Disorders. It is an excellent test for identifying the causes of pain, restricted movement and inflammation of the shoulder, elbow, hand & wrist, hip, knee, ankle & foot. It can also characterise many superficial lumps & bumps and diagnose suspected hernias of the abdominal wall and groin. Ultrasound is the second most common imaging test in the UK (after X-Rays). It is also one of the safest tests, as it only uses high-frequency sound waves to form an image of the structures being examined. There are no known risks from the sound waves used.
Non-MSK Scans
In addition to Musculoskeletal Ultrasound, we now also accept direct self-referral for other Ultrasound scans, including Abdomen, Renal tract, Aortic Aneurysm screening, Testes, Thyroid and Head & Neck scans.
A doctors’ referral is not necessary, although we are happy to accept referrals from all clinicians, including GP’s, Consultants, Physiotherapists, Chiropodists, and Chiropractors.

Preparation for your scan
Most of our scans do not require you to follow any preparation, however, for Abdomen and Aorta scans we require patients to be nil by mouth 6 hours prior to their scan appointment. This helps us to visualise your organs more clearly.
For Renal tract scans, patients need to drink 2 pints of water, 1 hour before the scan. This enables us to visualise your bladder in clearer detail.
Our Sonographer is always on hand to discuss your ultrasound questions, & ensure you receive the appropriate imaging exam for your condition.
Who will carry out my Scan?
Our Advanced Practice Sonographer is Spencer Laver. He is a highly experienced practitioner with over 26 years in the NHS and Private Practice. He has additional specialist qualifications in MSK Ultrasound and is CQC & HCPC Registered. He holds a weekly ultrasound session at our Sports Injury Clinic in Woodthorpe, meaning scans will be performed with minimal waiting times.
What are the benefits of an Ultrasound scan?
- Safe to use, as it does not involve potentially harmful radiation.
- Excellent visualisation of organs, tendons, muscles, nerves, blood vessels and soft tissue are obtained. Ultrasound is capable of viewing structures measuring a fraction of a millimetre.
- Dynamic imaging enables the sonographer to visualise the movement of joints & tendons in real-time, to assess injuries, disorders & function.
- A special ultrasound feature, called Colour Doppler, allows the real-time assessment of blood flow in organs, inflammatory pathology within joints and vascular changes in tendons.
- Ultrasound of MSK injuries and disorders is helpful for physiotherapists to confirm their diagnosis and provide clarity in cases where the cause for patients’ symptoms is less certain.
- For other areas of the body, ultrasound is excellent for identifying many diseases and pathologies, and is often the first line medical imaging tool of choice.
How much does a scan cost?
The price of a single-area Ultrasound scan, including report, is only £99.
Two region scans are £175 for the same appointment slot. Any further scans will require a separate booking.
You can book in using our online booking system without a referral from your Doctor or Physiotherapist. If you are unsure if an ultrasound is suitable for your complaint/injury then please contact us or call us on 0115 960 9553 and our Sonographer or one of our Physiotherapists will confirm this for you.
